Greetings, one and all.
First, I’d like to thank those of you that have subscribed to my shiny new sub-stack, and encourage those of you that haven’t subscribed – to do exactly that.
I’ll start off by briefly indulging in where I’ve been, who I am, and what I’m up to. I’m Ollie. 30, woke lefty, Watford FC, Economics graduate, esports, gambling, regulation, finance, jaded.
I’d hope many of you will have met me through my adventures in esports or the gambling industry – or both. I’ve just finished at Regulus where I got back down to the nitty-gritty of numbers, data, analysis and a very different way of approaching the corporate world (for the better). (If you want a hand with anything, shoot me a message!)
If you’ve met me at events in the last few years, it’s likely I’ve jokingly or nonchalantly ‘flamed’ esports as I haven’t necessarily had skin in the game – but I’ve always been keeping an eye out Although it’s hardly glowing (we all knew it wouldn’t be), it’s sad to see some of the most respected faces go full 180° and preach the end of the world.
I’ve always pined on about esports being used as a buzzword to attract investment – and this has been the case for years. Gfinity listed on the LSE in 2015 and had a share price peak of £28.50 in September 2017. Today it trades at £0.36.
Esports Technologies you may never have heard of. The Nevada HQ’ed company traded at a peak of US$32.88 in September 2021. The company has now dropped any mention of esports from its name, goes by ‘Ebet Inc’ and has a 52-week low of US$0.41.
Raising capital through using esports as a buzzword has almost simmered down a bit. Ebet Inc’s cash now comes from grey market online casino brands that were acquired, and Esports Ent Group used a similar approach.
We’ve had crypto come and whisk away half of our consultancy pool before they decided to tag multiple buzzwords together and launch some cracking esports ICOs. Well Played!
I’m glad I saved my OllieRing.jpg Gorilla NFT as it’s probably worth millions. Luckily for you, if you subscribe to my Substack and my Onlyfans I’ll give you the secret to the best eSports crypto NFT AI Web3 metaverse stock.
Anyway, we’ve all had enough of this bollocks haven’t we? The industry isn’t doomed. Anyone wishing to get involved in esports doesn’t need to walk up to the gates of Malta and ask Thorin permission to enter the industry he exclusively built.
The industry can, does, and should learn from others. External influence has already helped the industry along massively.
The next piece I’ll post will be around esports degrees (UK perspective).
(p.s. if Duncan doesn’t let you into heaven, try lob him a couple of DJ Esports underage crypto scam coins, or an illegal Montenegro gambling license)
Cheers, it’s good to be back.
Ollie
